Chapter Nine

My head is spinning as I try to take off into the air on my mop. I can’t stop thinking about Chris’s words.

Magnolia is a grey wolf.

What does that mean?

Is she a mix of good and bad—lawful and lawless?

I’ve met a pure white Lux wolf, only once, but that was enough. He was evil to the bone. The black Tenebris wolves I’ve met are good at the core. So what end of the spectrum is Magnolia on? Is she mostly good, with a little touch of bad? Is she a murderer?

These thoughts make it really hard to take off into the air.

To fly a broomstick, you have to think light, happy thoughts. It’s actually best if you can laugh.

I’m pretty far from laughing, as my thoughts keep getting tugged back to Magnolia’s questionable moral compass. Is she good or bad?

I need to think of something funny.

I search my mind.

How about the time when I packed both Turkey and Blueberry into a baby carrier, before they even knew each other? Turkey was all bent out of shape about being in such close proximity to a dog. He also wasn’t happy that I put a pair of big sunglasses on his face. I picture the way he looked in the large, oversized glasses, and feel a giggle squirming around in my chest, my throat, and then it bubbles from my lips.

“He he he,” I giggle aloud, picturing his grumpy, sunglass-clad face.

My feet lift off of the ground.

Grey—hm. Chris said Magnolia’s fur was grey. That must mean she’s part Tenebris wolf and part Lux wolf.

Thud! I feel my whole body compress as I hit the ground again. I bend my knees to absorb some of the impact, but it’s still uncomfortable. Drat.

Okay... Turkey in his sunglasses. Turkey in his sunglasses. My cat is the cutest!

I lift off again.

If Magnolia killed once, will she kill again?

Slam! I hit the ground, this time so hard that my bent knees can’t absorb the full impact, and I actually fall to the side and roll over once in an awkward somersault before getting upright again. I stand and brush dirt from my hip and shoulder, and position myself over the mop again.

Turkey’s voice floats into my mind. “Penelope? Where are you? I feel pain.”

“I’m outside,” I say. “Trying to take off on our mop. I’ve done it before, but this time I’m having trouble.”

“Why not take the broom?” Turkey asks.

“Jack took the broomstick.”

“Where are you going?”

“To Cora and Silas’s property. The cops are there, trying to arrest one of their pack members.”

“Magnolia?” Turkey asks.

“Yep,” I say. “I need to get over there fast.”

“Mops are less aerodynamic than brooms,” Turkey says.

“Okay,” I say in a huffy tone. The truth is, I’m getting antsy. I need to be up in the air, not down here discussing aerodynamics with my cat. “But I don’t really have any other options. Riding my bike will take way too long.”

“Perhaps we need to start thinking about a car for you,” Turkey says. “Something electric would be nice.
